The office is everywhere now
I love being in an office and I love being around amazing people......but...im confused.
“Is the term 'office' even a thing any more?”
Ok, here's why I think that. So yesterday I had a very productive day, but I came away totally confused as to what a 'normal' workplace is anymore.
I spent the first 2 hours at our studio reviewing a presentation. Then we went for business lunch at Soho House & Co where we worked for an hour each side of lunch on our laptops before discussing the future direction of able partners with a trusted colleague. Then we went over to the Building Society co-working space and networked with a few consultants and had a coffee and did some more work on our laptops. Decided we should have a walk over to a print shop to discuss how to get some marketing material printed. Then we bumped into another consultant and had a coffee where we took out our laptops again and did an impromptu business to business meeting. Then back to the studio to review the days work.
I felt we achieved more yesterday in one day than the previous week alone in our studio. We worked in 5 different locations and at no point was wifi an issue or did it feel odd to do work huddled around laptops even though we were in a co-working space, a nice cafe and a posh restaurant. In fact lots of people were doing the same thing.
”The term 'office' now is as unspecified as calling all retail a 'shop'“
I heard a great term to describe where we worked yesterday: the ‘nth’ floor. We existed in a digital world all day whilst only our physical environment changed depending on circumstance.
I’m not saying there isn’t a role for a dedicated work space for teams to gather, but I’m not sure it’s as important as I once thought it was.
The term 'blended space' is as close as I can get now.
Is it a shop, a cafe, a workspace, a gym, a restaurant?
What ever it is, its a lot more exciting than a boring all white office isn't it!
